Veterinarians
are people who deal with healthcare services of animals. They provide
services to pets, livestock and even laboratory animals. Most of them
work with small animals like cats, dogs, birds and reptiles whereas
only a few of them deal with large animals including the livestock
animals only. With time, advancement opportunities for the
veterinarians have increased substantially. Most of them have
established their own practice or have purchased an established one.
They diagnose animal health problems and also vaccinate against
diseases. Other main functions comprise of medicating animals, dressing
wounds, setting fractures, performing surgery and advising owners about
animal feeding.
Veterinarian Salary Information:
Average salary for a Vet ranges between $50,000 to $70,000 per annum.
Although, salary for new vets is lesser as compared to veteran
professionals but there is wide scope for growth in few years once you
obtain experience in the same field. Besides work experience and
educational qualification, the salary of a veterinarian also depends on
the branch of practice. Veterinarians who have been working for around
20 years can earn as high as $100,000 annually.
Veterinarian Educational Requirements:
In order to practice as a veterinarian, one must possess a degree of a
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine. The duration of the course is of four
years. However, the degree must be backed by an accredited college of
veterinary medicine or from one of the veterinarian schools. These days
certain countries have imposed an additional requirement for
Veterinarians which is that the person must be licensed before they can
practice. Also, competition for getting admission into a reputed
veterinary school is becoming quite stiff. To be accepted to a vet
school, one must have a strong background in science and mathematics.
Veterinarian Work Environment:
 The work environment of a veterinarian is amiable, sometimes hectic.
Since it involves dealing with animals that are not able to explain
their problem, diagnosis of the disease may become difficult under
certain situations. Sometimes they have to deal with emotional and
demanding pet owners. They work outdoors in all kinds of weather and
even under unsanitary conditions. Most of the Vets carry out private
practice while some prefer group practice under professionals. These
days, government agencies, private industries, zoos, medical colleges
and public health agencies also require the appointment of a Vet.
Working hours may be long including weekends and late evenings. |
